It is SO difficult to find a sunscreen that is made of natural ingredients, comes in zero waste packaging, and isn’t $50+ a pop. But I found one!
Here is my review of the Raw Elements Natural Sunscreen.
Application: Applying this sunscreen is interesting – the warmth from your hands will make it more liquidy, so you just rub your fingers in it a bit and then rub it into your face and body. It rubs in pretty well, but leaves you looking a teensy bit paler than normal. Feels a bit on the greasy side. It has sunflower oil in it, so you’ll end up smelling slightly like food!
Staining: As with all mineral sunscreens, prepare yourself for the fact that anything that touches your skin will be temporarily stained white! It will come out in the wash though.
SPF: They claim 30. I think that’s about accurate. In wearing it on a 4+ hour hike, it held up well, but I should have reapplied in the middle. I turned slightly pink in the intense Kauai sun.
Waterproofness: Okay. In a test, I applied the sunscreen 10 minutes before going into the Kauai waves, played in them for an hour, and came out just slightly pink. Keep in mind I’m pretty pale. In such intense sun conditions, I would recommend reapplying after 30 minutes of being in the water. I was also super stoked about this sunscreen’s big claim to fame: that it’s reef-safe. Unfortunately, while this sunscreen does not contain the-super-harmful-to-coral-reefs-ingredient oxybenzone, a recent study has shown that zinc oxide can lead to coral reef bleaching as well. 🙁
Getting it off: This sunscreen does NOT like to come off, which is a good thing. Expect to spend some time scrubbing in the shower or with soap to get it completely off!
One of the main reasons I bought this sunscreen was it’s form:
Comes in a tin: NO PLASTIC, ZERO WASTE. DO YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO FIND SUNSCREEN THAT IS ZERO WASTE THAT ACTUALLY WORKS THAT ISN’T $50+? VERY HARD. SO HARD THAT I HAVE TO TYPE IN CAPS.
Is solid: While this puppy fits the 3 oz TSA liquids rule, it’s not a liquid! So it doesn’t count against your liquids. Hooray! Also very handy for slipping in a pocket.
Is made of natural stuff: Here are the ingredients:
Active Ingredient: Non Nano Zinc Oxide (23%) (that’s the mineral sun protection part!). Inactive Ingredients: Sunflower Oil (mmm you’ll smell like nuts), Green Tea, Black Tea, Coffee Bean, Hemp Seed Oil, Cocoa Butter, Mango Butter, Beeswax, Rosemary Oil Extract, Vitamin E. I take it you’ve heard of all of these? They are all actually great for your skin! Hooray! And, aside from the zinc oxide and coral worries, none of this stuff is really terrible for the environment.
Is made in the USA/Cruelty Free/was founded by a lifeguard:
Brian Guadagno, a lifeguard and company founder, set off to make this sunscreen after he had trouble finding one that wasn’t terrible for the environment. Neat!
Where can you find it? Amazon, of course!
